They say that lightning never strikes twice in the one spot but Shane Everson is one to say that the old adage is not always true.
Just over 12 months ago Shane headed to Tabulam with Lampkin Lane and he recorded a very easy victory over 1720m.
Fast forward to Tabulam this year and Everson was there again with the same horse to contest the same race, the BM 45 1720m
Whilst the 2024 assignment was a fairly simple one with Lampkin Lane essentially winning as he liked 2025 proved to be somewhat more problematic.
With only five runners Lampkin Lane looked a good winning hope especially given he had already recorded a win on the tricky Tabulam circuit. However it is fair to say there were a number of obstacles yet to be overcome.
When the starting stalls were being moved into position they unfortunately made contact with the outside fence demolishing a large section. Moreover the front gates of the barriers were also damaged and amazingly only five barriers were still suitable for use.
After a long delay including discussions with the senior riders in the event the race eventually started and Lampkin Lane ridden by Jeff Kehoe came with a well timed run to secure victory.
But it was not over yet as the rider of the third placed runner was quick to fire in an objection against Lampkin Lane being declared the winner alleging interference in the run to the finish.
After an anxious wait the objection was dismissed and finally all the hurdles had been overcome… a broken rail… broken barriers…and a protest. Talk about a stressful day at the races.
